Dr. Parul Shah: Indian

Shah is a leading guru, choreographer, researcher and performer of Bharatanatyam and Indian dance with a national and international reputation.  She proved her ability as an arts administrator during her tenure as the youngest Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, M.S. University, Baroda, India, 1995-1996, where she is a Professor of Dance.  An Indio-American Fulbright Scholar award in 1992 was only one of the many prestigious awards and honors she has received.  She was the recipient of a Senior Artist fellowship awarded by the department of culture, Ministry of HRD, Government of India for 1994-1996.  Since 1990, she has collaborated with now Professor Emerita Marry “Buff” Brennan of the UW-Madison Dance Program on the Movement Analysis of the stylistic components of the Bharatanatyam form of Indian classical dance.  Her research on the dances and the music of the State of Gujarat in India provides the basis for the reconstruction of folk dances and for the choreography of her professional company that performs in India and internationally.  She is a visiting professor/scholar/artist at various universities and institutions in the U.S., including UCLA, State University of New York-Brockport, Skidmore, University of Utah and the Smithsonian Institute.  She has performed at national and international festivals, concerts and conferences in many cities of India and abroad.  In addition to her numerous appearances in the U.S., she has performed in Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Denmark, Greece, Austria, Japan, Italy, Egypt and Hungary.  In 1998-1999 she received the “Gaurav Puraskar” award from the Gujarat State Sangit Natak Akademy for her contributions to Indian Classical Dance.  Shah has been with Call for Peace Drum & Dance Company since 1999, and her desire is to extend and expand the boundaries of dance and dance education, sharing the arts of her culture.
