How and when was Call for Peace established?
In 1988, Call for Peace’s Artistic Director, Dawn
Shegonee, and Ambassador, Art Shegonee, had a vision of
celebrating man’s interconnectedness through drum and
dance. More
specifically, the Native American drum would serve as the
deep, earthy heartbeat of a drumming circle, while other
cultures’ traditional drums would represent the different
rhythms of man and nature. Together the drums would echo the harmony that is
possible between all peoples and things on earth, and this
audible unity would be complimented and mirrored in the
visual presentation of unique ethnic dances. When Reverend Charles Garel of Madison, Wisconsin’s
Garel House and the Martin Luther King Coalition approached
the Shegonees in 1989 about bringing together five
cultures’ traditional drums and drumming together at the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Shegonees knew the
time was right to form Call for Peace Drum & Dance
Company. In 1990, the Shegonees realized their vision when the first
Call for Peace performance of both drummers and dancers
occurred at The Bayview International Center for Education
and the Arts.
